1-Minute Read: Talk it Out as Your Kids Go Back to School
As a parent, it’s essential to have age-appropriate discussions with our children about tough situations they might face in the upcoming school year.
These topics might include:
- Bullying
- Drama with friends
- Puberty
- Appropriate relationships with others
- The power of their words
- Peer pressure
- Drugs and alcohol
- Dealing with academic stress
These discussions can be uncomfortable, but they are important in helping your child navigate new experiences. Rehearse what you will say, be prepared for questions you think your child might ask, and consult with other parents in advance to help these tough talks run smoothly.
If you need advice or resources on how to talk with your child about these difficult issues, consult with a doctor, teacher, school counselor, or mental health professional.
What to Watch For:
- Excessive Complaining
- Severe Worrying
- Sleeplessness that Interferes with Daily Activity
- Unusual Irritability
